Life MOT : Control Your Future

Self-care takes on many forms. It is essential to maintain your mental health to ensure you have a solid financial and emotional foundation. Fiscal responsibility and relationship trauma can hold you back from creating the life you want. A vital part of the healing process is the ability to envision the future that you want. While vision boarding and manifestation are good tools to start with, you must implement these steps in real life. To keep you on track, we have created a monthly life MOT. Set a date to run through a checklist of tangible actions that will get you closer to your target. Read our top five tips to build the life you want.

Check your bank statements each month

Saving money is the first step in financial responsibility. Stay on top of what is coming in and out of your account. Taking note of your outgoings each month will allow you to see how much money you spend socialising. If you're aiming to buy a house, look into investing the money you spend on coffees and brunches. Apps like Plum* or Wombat allow investments from as little as £1. As we learned in 2020, creative ways to get together with friends do not cost much.

Get paid directly into your savings account

Run your current account like a business account. Transfer the exact amount for bills from your savings account on the 1st of the month. The available balance is a clear indication of the amount of money you could save each month. By psychologically seeing the money in your savings account, you will start envisioning having a nest egg this high.

Set a socialising budget

If you are serious about saving, set a realistic weekly budget that will allow you to enjoy some downtime still. You would be surprised once you calculate the cost of bottomless brunches and Costa coffees. Sell your old clothes to fund your fun. Advertise your old furniture and kitchen appliances on the Facebook marketplace. Sell occasion wear on DePop or eBay, and you can make a mint. We often don't repeat the outfits that we buy for birthdays or holidays. Whether it sells for £5 or £5000, it stops you from hoarding items you no longer need. Buy a reusable coffee cup and make it at home. If you insist on getting a cappuccino from your local barista, a reusable cup will still earn you a discount.

Set a target

Research how much it will cost you to build the life that you want. Calculate the amount you will need to save and start to put it aside. If you would like to open your own business, how much do you need to set aside for marketing and advertising? Keep a note of the housing prices in your dream area and save towards this goal. Most small businesses fail because entrepreneurs do not adequately plan the start-up costs. Finance does not have to be scary. Do not avoid your bills or subscription packages. Create an excel document of your current monthly expenditure and you can put realistic steps in place.

Advance your career

Every 30-days, take a note of how your career is going. How well did you handle your responsibility at work? Take stock of your monthly goals, and you will notice missed opportunities caused by fear. Successful people plan their advancement and actively seek progression. Write your future CV listing your dream career. Envision the job you would like to retire from, and you create a clear pathway. You need to see it to achieve it!
